As a swimmer, surfer, and Hawaii’s goodwill ambassador, Kahanamoku was renowned not only for his incredible athletic prowess, but also for his grace, humility, and good sportsmanship. With his remarkable career, he set new standards for aquatic competition and is considered the father of international surfing.
In 2002, he was honored on a U.S. postage stamp.
