Happy birthday, Count Basie! Born on this day in 1904, William “Count” Basie was a prominent big band leader and jazz pianist. He made a name for himself during the Harlem Renaissance as a talented musician and composer, touring the country and recording with his jazz orchestra which he led for more than 50 years.
In 1996, Count Basie appeared on a U.S. postage stamp as part of the Big Band Leaders pane in the Legends of American Music series.
