On July 26, 1775, the Continental Congress created the position of Postmaster General and appointed Benjamin Franklin to it. This act signaled the birth of the Post Office Department, the predecessor of the U.S. Postal Service. This stamp was issued in 2006 as part of a set of four commemorating the 300th anniversary of Franklin’s birth.
